The Adelaide Strikers will take on the Melbourne Stars in match number 36 of the Big Bash League season 2020-21. Both teams look favourites to qualify for the playoffs. They will be keen to get things done.
Although the Adelaide Strikers are in a comfortable position in the top four, they will be very much disappointed not to win their previous match. They have currently secured 17 points in nine encounters with the help of four wins. They also possess a healthy run rate of 0.325 which can serve to be very advantageous for them if things get tight when the league stage ends. Adelaide Strikers have been good in this season of the BBL.
However, they have only themselves to blame for their loss in their previous match. At one stage, it was looking like they will post a total well over 200. But, their lacklustre batting in the final six overs cost them the game. They could only manage to score 44 runs in those six overs and lost six wickets during that time. However, a total of 177 runs could still have proved to be handy if their bowlers had bowled well to the plans. Rashid Khan, Wes Agar, and Harry Conway to some extent could stem the run flow. Rashid Khan was the highlight of the bowlers, picking up 2 wickets in his quota of 4 overs giving away 24 runs. However, the other bowlers were not aggressive enough, and hence the result did not go their way.
At one stage, the Melbourne Stars were almost favourites to qualify for the playoffs. However, they are now trying to even fight to reach the playoffs. The multiple defeats in their last five matches have not served their cause well. They have now slipped to the seventh position in the points table. They have just three wins from the eight matches and have a torrid run rate of -0.428. All the teams above them have a better net run rate, so they will be desperately looking to end their losing streak and come out with a win in the upcoming match.
A couple of matches ago, Glenn Maxwell almost won them the game but failed at the end due to a batting collapse. Maxwell scored 70 runs from 37 balls. The Stars have been heavily dependent on Maxwell and Stoinis throughout the whole tournament. Throughout the course of the tournament, the Stars’ batting has been the cause of their headache even though they have some fantastic batsmen in their line-up. The line-up has been constantly changed and that has been a problem for the Melbourne Stars. In the absence of Nathan Coulter-Nile, Billy Stanlake has performed well and Liam Hatcher has been good as well. Adam Zampa will also be a key player as was the case in the previous match.
Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars have faced each other 11 times. The Stars have won 5 times and the Strikers have won 6 times.
Comparing the two teams on paper, the Strikers certainly have a better-balanced team with almost every player contributing in the tournament so far. Stars, on the other hand, seem to be over-dependent on Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. Besides, the Strikers are playing on their home ground and that should serve as their advantage.
