Rajasthan Royals will face off against Delhi Capitals in the seventh match of the Indian Premier League. The tournament so far has been nothing short of brilliant. Close games and nail-biting finishes have been the theme of the competition. With that being said, only better things to follow in IPL 2021 hopefully.
The headline for the Royals is that their mainstay all-rounder Ben Stokes will be missing the complete season after the Englishman injured his finger. No Jofra Archer and no Ben Stokes is just the beginning of the problems for a one-match old captain in Sanju Samson. Stokes’ shoes will be hard to fill, but his absence should bring an opportunity for David Miller or Liam Livingston to step up. They will want to play some good live cricket and display their mettle.
Form-wise, the Rajasthan Royals’ batsmen – mainly Sanju Samson – did a commendable job in their first game. Even though the 2008 champions couldn’t cross the line, they can cause enough shocks to destabilize the likes of the Delhi Capitals. Chetan Sakariya is another player who would garner attention after his brilliant performance in the first game.
Rajasthan Royals squad: Sanju Samson (captain), Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Riyan Parag, Shreyas Gopal, Rahul Tewatia, Mahipal Lomror, Kartik Tyagi, Andrew Tye, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Anuj Rawat, David Miller, Manan Vohra, Christopher Morris, Shivam Dube, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman, Liam Livingstone, K.C. Cariappa, Akash Singh, Kuldip Yadav, Ben Stokes
The 2020 finalists look like a much stronger squad than they were last year. Even with no Shreyas Iyer and no Anric Nortje – for the time being – the Capitals look like a team that will qualify for the playoffs easily. Capitals’ all-round performance against Chennai Super Kings saw them cross the line with eight balls remaining and seven wickets in hand.
Their team combination must remain more or less the same from the first game. Kagiso Rabada would be the most likely addition as Stoinis, Hetmyer and Woakes qualify as the other overseas players. It will interesting to see whether Pant brings in Umesh Yadav or Ishant Sharma.
Delhi Capitals squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (captain and wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan, Steve Smith, Umesh Yadav, Ripal Patel, Vishnu Vinod, Lukman Meriwala, M Siddarth, Tom Curran, Sam Billings
Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals have faced each other 22 times in the IPL. Delhi has won 11 matches while Rajasthan has won on 11 occasions.
Rajasthan Royals would need more than a Sanju Samson to counter Delhi’s bowling. While the pink brigade has that firepower in Buttler, Vohra, Tewatia, and Riyan Parag, facing Rabada will be no easy. Delhi Capitals should win the game by a decent margin.
