Sri Lanka will face off against West Indies in the first ODI match of their tour of the West Indies. After being dominated by the home side in the T20 series, the visitors will want to leave their mark now. It could be the start of the rise of Sri Lankan cricket if they can really perform, with some positive cricket news coming their way. However, it will not be easy at all against an in-form West Indies side.
The hosts come after establishing their dominance in the T20 series. They will want to play some great live cricket now. While they emerged victorious only by a fine margin, Kieron Pollard will want his side to continue the rich vein and finish the series on a high. West Indies have some big names to flaunt, some hard-hitting all through the No 9/10 in the lineup. However, the last time the team played 50 over cricket, it was against Bangladesh, where they lost 3-0. The top order needs to set a platform for the explosive middle order to take over. The bowling in thr hands of Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Fabian Allen and Kevin Sinclair looks promising.
West Indies ODI squad: Kieron Pollard (C), Shai Hope (vc), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd, Kevin Sinclair.
The result might not say this, but Sri Lanka’s young stars put up quite a fight in the T20 series. The side is not expected to see a lot of change coming into th ODI series. The likes of their slow spinners – Akila Dhananjaya and Wanindu Hasaranga – have troubled the Windies batsmen and Dimuth Karunaratne will back them to provide twenty lethal overs. Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella and Dinesh Chandimal will have to carry the weight of the batting order, Karuraratne playing his part at the top.

Sri Lanka ODI squad: Dimuth Karunaratne (C), Dasun Shanaka, Danushka Gunathilake, Pathum Nissanka, Ashen Bandara, Oshada Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Thisara Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Ramesh Mendis, Nuwan Pradeep, Asitha Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Akila Dananajaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Dilshan Madushanka, Suranga Lakmal.
Sri Lanka and West Indies have faced each other 11 times in ODI matches. Sri Lanka have won six matches and Windies have won on five occasions.
This ODI series will be included in the qualification tally for the ICC One Day World Cup 2023 and the teams would want to start their campaigns with victories. The pitch has not really assisted the batsmen and Windies have only managed three victories in the venue. Even considering the fact that the Sri Lankans will fancy their slow bowlers to exploit the conditions, but West Indies still get into the game as favorites. It’s the home advantage, Pollard’s men will bank on to start the series with a ‘bang’.
