West Bromwich’s Gareth Barry breaks Ryan Giggs’ Premier League appearance record as he starred in 2-0 match loss against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Barry made his 633rd appearance on Monday night that beat the world-record set by former United player, Giggs who had a total of 632.
The Baggies’ boss Tony Pulis made Barry’s milestone more memorable by appointing him as the team captain during the game, despite having club captain Jonny Evans and vice-captain Jake Livermore to feature in the starting line-up as well.
The 36-year-old midfielder also marked his 20th season in the English league and received praises from long-time Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger.
“I’m told that Gareth Barry could become the Premier League’s record appearance maker this evening,” wrote Wenger. “It’s an incredible achievement but he is a marvellous player.
“Personally, I think he’s been underrated because he is always focused, determined, strong in the challenge, has good vision, a top-quality left foot and is also a very good defender.”
Prior Barry’s move to the Hawthorns, he also played for Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Everton.
