The side of Jose Mourinho continued their winning run in preseason as they beat Real Madrid on penalty shootouts in Santa Clara.
United men displayed dominance as Anthony Martial created an opportunity for Jesse Lingard to open score with a brilliant finishing at the late seconds of first half.
Real Madrid responded to this through Casemiro who brought the game to a momentary tie following Victor Lindelof’s foul on Theo Hernandez with a rash challenge.
However, Manchester United came out on top in a poor shootout, winning 2-1 after five penalties given for both squads.
Mourinho, who seemed to be entirely unfazed, has said in post-match, “It was a good training session. A very good first half against a top Real side. In the second half we lost motivation, intensity, and appetite to play against their youngsters. My players in the second half were disappointed not to play against their best players.
“Three out of 10 penalties—that’s pre-season. I didn’t choose my best penalty takers.”
