Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo has taken his 5th Ballon d’Or on Thursday which puts him equal with long-time Barcelona rival, Lionel Messi.
Messi finished second in the voting, while his former team mate Neymar, who is now playing for Paris Saint-Germain has landed the third spot.
Ronaldo accepted the award at a ceremony held at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. In a statement, he said, “I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.
“This year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League. Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.”
The award marked the seventh straight year that Ronaldo and Messi have in the top two for the Ballon d’Or.
Real Madrid forward has won trophy back in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017 being the latest; while Barcelona forward has been awarded back in the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015.
