The Formula 1 championship continues with Round 13 at the historic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, on the outskirts of Milan. Lewis Hamilton’s victory at Spa last weekend gave Mercedes the perfect start to the second half of the season, responding to Ferrari’s one-two in Hungary before the summer break with a victory. While most were surprised by just how competitive Ferrari proved to be, Hamilton nevertheless capitalized on Vettel to gain victory at the ‘Mercedes track’.

Seventy years since Enzo Ferrari first drove a car to bear his name, the Italian manufacturer is set to write the next chapter of its F1 success story. Vettel’s showing at Spa gave the team confidence that it will not be walked over by Mercedes at high-speed tracks. There are exciting opportunities for online betting this weekend.

Circuit analysis

Monza is a power circuit; where the impact of engine power can be most firmly felt, and has direct impact on the lap timings. Those with less grunt will often need to run their car lower on drag, producing less downforce through the corners but making them at a disadvantage down the straights where positions are won and lost. Drivers spend almost 80% of lap distance at full throttle here, interrupted only by a few corners namely the Lesmos, Variante Ascari and Parabolica. Thus, power is important. Factor these in your betting calculations.

In general, drivers will improve their lap by 0.2 seconds for each additional 10 horsepower their cars can produce. The high-speed nature of Monza should play towards Mercedes’ strengths, but the same was said of Spa, yet Vettel was able to put up a good fight against Hamilton all the way. Meanwhile, Hamilton missed out on a Friday practice double as he was beaten to the fastest lap of the afternoon by Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Title race

Ferrari is once again eyeing the title. But Hamilton’s recent resurgence has reduced the gap between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari needs a strong performance from Vettel. Currently, he leads the 2017 Drivers’ Championship with 220 points, with Hamilton in close second with 213 points.

Prediction for online betting: Mercedes will fancy their chances here, but Sebastian Vettel is likely to win at Monza this weekend. Check out the odds here.
