2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro needed just four sets to upset the 19-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Del Potro stunned the third seeded Swiss with a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory to advance in the semifinal round and avoid the first ever meeting between Federer and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal at the US Open.
“I played my best match of the tournament. I served well and hit my forehand as hard as I can. We played a great match and I think I deserved to win in the end. I think it’s my home court. You make me so happy every time I play here. I love to see the crowd chanting for me.” The 24th seeded Argentinian said
Moving forward, del Porto will now face Nadal, who won 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals against Andrey Rublev of Russia, to set a semifinal showdown.
“I know against Rafa the crowd will be tough for me but I hope you are cheering for me again. He is number one in the world, but with this amazing support anything can happen.” The 28-year-old Argentinian added
