Petra Kvitova’s Wimbledon Championship dream was shattered by American Madison Brengle in the second round at the All England Club.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova was knocked out on her third tournament of this year and lost 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 on court two to Brengle in an hour and 43 minutes.
The 27-year-old Czech lost in the first set and fought back in the second set. In the deciding third set, Kvitova struggled then needed medical help but the match was completely over in favor with ranked 95th in the world Brengle, who had never won a singles game at Wimbledon before this year.
Kvitova came into this tournament as one of the favorite to take home the crown after her inspiring win at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
So far, the defeat of the 11th seeded Czech is the biggest upset of the tournament.
“My body just didn’t really do the best, unfortunately. But I was really trying. I fought, and I’m not sure what happened, actually. I could not just breathe, and I was feeling a bit sick, as well. I’m glad it’s over. It was really tough and I feel really empty right now. I know my body is not great but mentally I’m glad that it’s over. It was kind of a fairytale but on the other hand it was very tough. I need to look forward and look to the future, be focusing on the next tournaments. I know I can play on all surfaces.” Said Kvitova
Meanwhile, Brengle is going to face the Greek youngster Maria Sakkari, who recovered from a set and 1-4 down to defeat Kristyna Pliskova, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, and 6-4.
