The last grand slam of the year, US Open, starts today at the Flushing Meadows, New York. The tournament has been hit with a long list of star absentees: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori in the Men’s section and Victoria Azarenka in the Women’s section. That does not make the tournament any less exciting. It has only made the event more open. It is hard to predict the eventual winner in either section, although Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza are the favourites for online betting.
Preview – Men’s Section
If they keep winning till then, Federer and Rafael Nadal will meet in the semi final. They do not have an easy draw though. Nadal will have to overcome Tomas Berdych and Grigor Dimitrov to book a semi final berth. Federer will have to face stiff challenge from sixth seed Dominic Thiem and unpredictable Nick Kyrgios. Even Federer’s first round match – against the 19-year-old US emerging star Frances Tiafoe – will be a potential banana skin. But Lady Luck has been with Federer right through the year. Expect it to continue for punting purposes, because at 35 years of age and in the twilight of his career, he deserves every bit of luck.
If you are a looking for a dark horse in the Men’s section to put your online wagering money on, look no further than Alexander Zverev. He is seeded fifth and he has the easiest draw among the top seeds. He does not have to face a serious threat till the semi finals and even in semi finals he will avoid Federer and Nadal.
Preview – Women’s Section
Muguruza’s dominant run in the Wimbledon and her subsequent good form give her a slight edge over the others. But do not rush to put your money her in online betting. Venus Williams, Mario Sharapova and Angelique Kerber have the experience to topple her. Elina Svitolina still has prove her credentials in the grand slams. But the World Number one will be eager to prove that she belongs to the top. But the major challenge to Muguruza will come from Simona Halep.
