The 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka reached the French Open quarterfinals and set to face the 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic at Roland Garros for a spot in the semifinals.
Wawrinka beat the fan favorite Gael Monfils with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 victory to advance in the quarterfinal stage in just two hours and 43 minutes to get the ninth win from 10 meetings with French opponents at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Croatian seventh seed Cilic proceeded to his first French Open quarterfinals when South African Kevin Anderson suffered a thigh injury and retired from their last-16 clash.
Cilic had a comfortable 6-3, 3-0 lead when the 31-year-old decided to quit the match due to the injury in just 48 minutes on the court.
The 28-year-old Cilic is the first Croatian man in the quarter-finals since Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic in 2006.
Wawrinka of Switzerland and Cilic are now set to meet for the 14th time on the ATP level, with Wawrinka having an 11-2 head-to-head record over Cilic.
