Melbourne Stars all-rounder Marcus Stoinis hailed as the 2019-20 Big Bash League player of the tournament after leading the run-scoring charts for the season. Stoinis tops Sydney Sixers paceman Tom Curran by two votes, with the winner decided by a ballot among the umpires after each match of the 56-game home and away season.
“I’m honoured to have been voted as the 2019-20 KFC Big Bash League Player of the Tournament,” said Stoinis. “I love playing for the Melbourne Stars. This team is special to me and I love having the opportunity to run out onto the field with them.”
The 30-year-old scored 612 runs in 15 games including one hundred and five half-centuries, at an average of 55.63. With only 26 runs, he could set a new record for the most in a single campaign, passing D’Arcy Short’s record tally for runs scored in a single BBL campaign. Sydney Thunder opener Alex Hales finished in third place with 23 votes.
“We’ve got a big match against the Sydney Thunder on Thursday night and I hope to see our Team Green fans at the MCG to help get us over the line,” he added.
Stoinis posted 81 unbeaten from 54 balls against Hobart Hurricanes in Moe to kick start his season for the Stars. His breakthrough came as he made history with his record-breaking knock of 147 not out from 79 balls against the Sixers in January, the highest individual score in BBL history.
Meanwhile, Stars finished the regular season on top of the ladder with 10 wins from 14 matches. The Melbourne side must beat the Sydney Thunder in the ‘challenger’ match to make to the finals with Sydney Sixers, who beat them by 43 runs in ‘the qualifier’.
Aside from Stoinis (26 votes), Curran (24 votes) and Hales (23 votes), the other players on the leaderboard with their votes are Jon Wells (22), Glenn Maxwell (21), D’Arcy Short (21), Rashid Khan (18), Chris Lynn (17), Josh Philippe (17) and Callum Ferguson (16)
