A high-flying Gujarat Titans will be locking horns with the deflated and bartered Royal Challengers in what has turned out to be a must-win game for the Bangalore boys. The Titans will know that a win from here and their passage to the playoffs will be all but secured. They have played some really good cricket so far.
Whereas the Challengers will be well aware of the fact that their morale as well as the NRR have taken a massive beating, and will have to win big if they have to stay afloat in the race for the playoffs. They have been poor with the cricket bat in this year’s IPL.
A fixture with two teams approaching it on the back of contrasting fortunes has always seen an upset of sorts, where the team in crisis pulls a fast one on the favourites, and RCB will dearly hope to continue this trend, as their season depends upon it right now.
Call it a statistical anomaly, call it luck, or call it whatever you want, the fact still remains that the Titans are the kings of close finishes. Just when it seems that their fortunes have come to an end and they will finally lose this one, they come out with a rabbit out of their hats, and each one is even more sensational than the other. Their latest game against the Sunrisers was another testament to the fact of their ability to win close games, with Rashid Khan the hero this time, although not with the ball, but with the bat.
While it is all well and good that they are winning these close games, they will be aware of the fact that there will come a time that they are bound to lose a close one, so they will hope to finish games as comfortably as possible, because this team are on a roll, and will surely take some stopping to do.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
The Royal Challengers have stumbled, and now that has turned into a full-fledged freefall, with their team being punched in the gut twice in quick succession. If the game against Hyderabad was an anomaly, their game against the Royals was a straight-up implosion. After doing an extremely good job with the ball to restrict the free-scoring Royals to just 144, the batsmen made an absolute mockery of themselves, with none of them able to stay on the pitch long to make a difference, and each dismissal was a stark reminder of the sheer inconsistency of the side to capitalize on such situations.
The biggest question mark on that team is the form of Virat Kohli, which has now descended into an uncontrollable spiral. He is just not able to put bat on ball, and he just scored 9 runs in his last 3 innings with the bat. They will have to find ways to improve massively with the bat or else the gap will be too big to breach.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two sides in the IPL.
With RCB floundering badly, and the Gujarat Titans knowing that a win here will almost guarantee qualification to the playoffs, the Titans will be the overwhelming favourites in this game for sure.
