Two teams, on the fringes of the playoffs spot, will be looking to give their all in this fixture, as the Kolkata Knight Riders take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a virtual knockout for the Knights. The Knight Riders have no other option but to win all their games, and the same goes for the Sunrisers as well. They will want to improve on their previous campaign’s performances, though KKR had a great IPL 2021.
With both teams having been underperforming in the last few games, it will come down to which team is able to stop the rot first. With a lot of underlying problems on both sides, this could have all the makings of a fascinating encounter between two sides who are practically on the edge. They will want to play a good cricket match.
Kolkata Knight Riders
This is the last chance saloon for the Knights. They have meandered from excellent, to the unfortunate, to downright horrendous, but this is the time where you earn your keep. These are the moments that separate men from the boys. The type of games that mould you into the team that you are trying to be.
They have the confidence to pull it off, after dispatching their bogey team last time out. There will be some questions too. With news of McCullum taking the England job, this team will want to go out all guns blazing, just like their coach. They have the tools, they have the talent. The big question will be whether they possess the desire and the Hunger to make this situation a winning one.
The streakiest team of the tournament arrives at a stage where they cannot afford to be streaky anymore. They lost 2 in a row, then won 5 straight, and now approach this game on the back of a 4-match losing streak. The team has been held back by the slow starts in the power play, and Kane Williamson has to bear the brunt of the blame.
The captain has a strike rate of under 100, and that has been detrimental to the team’s fortunes. They are too reliant on Markram and Pooran, and even the former has now started to show signs of struggle. The team needs a jolt from somewhere, and they will not care where it is from as long as it helps them stay alive in the tournament
Out of 22 encounters so far, Kolkata Knight Riders have won 14 while Sunrisers Hyderabad has won 8.
Both the teams have been dodgy in their recent games, But KKR has the better momentum coming into this fixture following their win against Mumbai, coupled with the losing run from the Orange Army, The Knights have to be close favourites for this game.
