West Indies will face off against Bangladesh in the first Test match of their tour at Chittagong. The two teams battle it out to prove a point. The Windies have not had a great time so far, though Bangladesh have been playing better with cricket bat.
The visitors are short of the key all-round services of regular skipper Jason Holder. To add to that, if you google cricket injury updates for the Windies, the report shows that batsman Darren Bravo and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich are also out. However, this would see this series as an opportunity to test their bench strength. Kriag Braithwaite fills Holder’s shoes in his absence. Shanon Gabriel and Kemar Roach joined the team, which is considered as a big boost especially post West Indies’ ODI leg loss against Bangladesh.
Speaking of form, Braithwaite and opener John Campbell scored some important runs in the practice game. Joshua Da Silva also looked promising as Raymon Reifer bolstered his hopes of selection with a 49 not-out with the bat and 2/7 with the ball. However, the hero for the visitors was spinner Rahkeem Cornwall, who picked a fifer. The other spinner Jomel Warrican also picked three wickets as West Indies bowled out BCB XI out for 160 in their first innings.
West Indies Squad: Kraigg Brathwaite(c), John Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua Da Silva(w), Kyle Mayers, Rahkeem Cornwall, Raymon Reifer, Jomel Warrican, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Veerasammy Permaul, Kavem Hodge, Alzarri Joseph, Sheyne Moseley
Talk of form and some statistics just don’t go unnoticed – Bangladesh have won four of their past five Tests at home. Now with Shakib Al Hasan in the side, skipper Mominul Haque will see a much more attacking options in his arsenal. Bangladesh’s spin department will hold the spotlight and try to drown the visitors like they did in the ODI series. Al Hasan, Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan could all get a spot in the squad. Coming to batting, Tamim Iqbal, Mominul Haque and Liton Das will be the ones to watch.
Bangladesh Squad: Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque(c), Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Das(w), Mehidy Hasan, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mohammad Mithun, Abu Jayed, Taskin Ahmed, Shadman Islam, Yasir Ali, Ebadot Hossain, Hasan Mahmud
Bangladesh and West Indies have faced each other 16 times in Test matches. Bangladesh have won 4 matches, the Windies have won 10 matches and two games have ended in draws.
The pitch at Chittagong sounds synonymous to some sharp spin and it could be the wrists and fingers of these bowlers that could decide the fate of their teams. Judging the teams on paper, considering the pitch conditions, Bangladesh should win the well fought game. Shakib’s presence is expected to play a major role and if the all-rounder gets a hold of West Indies – with bat or ball– the match could be considered half lost. While the Windies hold Rahkeem Cornwall and a young Jomel Warrican in their attack, Bangladesh still holds the edge.
