Manchester United sealed a spectacular comeback to beat Crystal Palace with a 3-2 road victory at the Selhurst Park.
Thanks to Nemanja Matic as he scored a sensational injury-time winner to help the Red Devils regained the second place in the Premier League table.
During the match, the Eagles seemed to control the game when Andros Townsend opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the first half. Early in the second half, Patrick van Aanholt put the host in a commanding position with his goal.
However, United fought back from two goals down when Chris Smalling scored a fine header before top scorer Romelu Lukaku equalized it to 2-2, earning his 23rd goal of the season, with few minutes to play.
Matic’s shot from 30 yards completed the win and left the Palace in the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, despite of the triumph, United boss Jose Mourinho admitted that his side made so many mistakes and were so lucky to win the game.
“It was a fantastic match for the people in front of the screen and in the stadium but difficult match for me because my team made so many mistakes. We had an amazing attitude and very good quality football in the second half but we made so many defensive mistakes and I am not only speaking about my defenders. I am speaking about my team generally. I think the first goal is a bad goal. Then we concede the goal that is good to show the kids in the academies around the country, to see top teams and top players can concede silly goals. But then the attitude was fantastic, the intensity, the dynamic, the risk and then you need that little bit of luck to win in the last minute, but I think I would say we deserve because the dominance in that last half hour was huge. I don’t like my teams to lose organization like we did, but amazing match an amazing comeback, and very important victory for us because now we have nine matches to the end and we have nine points to fifth place which is not amazing but is OK.” Mourinho stated
Mourinho also gave credits to the Eagle’s performance and to the team’s coach Roy Hodgson, who he knew did everything to win the match.
“I have to say Roy had a fantastic game plan, really aggressive, two big strong strikers to play direct to them and cause us problems with crosses and direct football and second balls, also counter-attacking with [Andros] Townsend and Patrick [Van Aanholt]. So sometimes the winner is the one that deserves congratulations but I have been many times on the losing side and sometimes I felt I did many things right and I think Roy did everything right.” Mourinho concluded
