Gujarat Titans won IPL in season debut

Gujarat Titans won their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title on their debut season in the tournament after beating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Hardik Pandya-led side produced a spell of 4-0-17-3 and a pressure-easing 34 off 30 in the small chase of 131. The latest on cricket IPL 2022 and betting tips are here!

“The kind of support the support staff has shown for the players is wonderful. This is the right example for every team in the world that if you can play as a team, you can do wonders,” Pandya said after the match. “This title is going to be a special one because we talked about creating a legacy. The coming generations will talk about it.” Pandya picked up three wickets and scored 34 runs.

Pandya made a fine 34 off 30 balls in response to Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan, who opted to bat first in the final. Gujarat also owe the victory on a 63-run third-wicket partnership between Shubman Gill, who made 45 not out and Pandaya  to achieve their target with 11 balls to spare. Gill and David Miller also assured that the debutants get past the finish line in the end.

Pandya also became just the fourth Indian captain to win the IPL title after MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Gautam Gambhir. He joined his former Mumbai Indians teammates Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu with the cricketers who have the most IPL trophies to their name. His performance with bat and ball also helped the team throughout the season until their maiden triumph.

Exactly 6 years ago since winning his first IPL title as a player, GT head coach Ashish Nehra became the first Indian in head coach to win the Indian Premier League trophy.  He joins Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne to have won the IPL both as a player and head coach. “I’ve loved working with Ashish, he’s really strong tactically – trying to put a game plan together on the fly is not easy,” mentor Gary Kirsten said.

Meanwhile, RR’s Sanju Samson remained positive despite the defeat. “This season is really special for us, we have been able to play good cricket and gave fans some happy moments,” he said. “With Jos playing throughout 20 overs, my role was a bit different. It was a decent season for me, nice 30s and 40s and 20s. But there is a lot to learnt. And huge congratulations to Gujarat Titans.”
