World number one Rafael Nadal kicked of his 13th appearance at the US Open with a win to book his spot in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
Nadal beat Serbian Dusan Lajovic in three sets with a comfortable 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and 6-2 triumph in a match played under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof due to the heavy rain in New York.
“At the beginning, I felt he was controlling the points too many times. But I played a good point at 6-6, then hit a good winner to win the set. Then everything was changing. The first round is never easy. There are nerves out here when you play in his amazing place. Today was a match that I won and I have another chance the next day. I need to be ready for that, and I hope to be ready for that, because I really worked a lot.” 15-time Grand Slam champion Nadal said
Meanwhile, the top-seeded Spaniard will now face either Taro Daniel of Japan or American Tommy Paul in the second round of the tournament as he begins his quest for the third US Open title.
